Google has announced two major updates for its Gemini AI chatbot on Android — Personalised Responses and Temporary Chats. These additions aim to enhance both convenience and privacy for users.
Two Key Features Announced
In a blog post, Google revealed that the new features are rolling out to the Gemini Android app, though there’s no confirmation yet on whether they will be available on the web version.
-
Temporary Chats (Privacy Mode)
This new privacy feature allows users to start conversations that are not stored on Google’s servers or used to train AI models — similar to ChatGPT’s temporary chat option. Information from these chats is also not used by Gemini for personalised responses.Google keeps Temporary Chats on its AI servers for up to 72 hours only, to process replies and handle feedback. After that, all data is deleted. This feature is ideal for sensitive discussions and will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
-
Personalised Responses
With this update, Gemini can now pull relevant information from your previous conversations to tailor its replies — much like a memory feature. For example, if you’ve previously discussed your favourite comic book characters, Gemini might later suggest a birthday theme based on them, complete with related ideas and details. This feature is currently limited to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model and is not yet available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the UK. Google plans to expand it to the Gemini 2.5 Flash model and more regions soon.
Personalised Responses will be turned on by default once rolled out, but users can disable it anytime:
-
Go to Settings in the Gemini app.
-
Select Personal context.
-
Navigate to Your past chats with Gemini to manage or delete stored conversations.
Users can also manage chat history via the Gemini Apps Activity page.
Both features are expected to reach Android users worldwide over the coming weeks, with Personalised Responses arriving in more models and regions gradually. For now, Temporary Chats give privacy-conscious users a safe mode for conversations, while Personalised Responses bring a more tailored, context-aware AI experience.
